Fabulous Leader, Wonderful Company!!!

15-May-2023

I just returned from completing Lupita's Wonders of Mexico Trip in Spring 2023. We traveled from Mexico City to Tulum in 21 days. Jaime González is a fabulous leader. His enthusiasm was infectious. He was like the energizer bunny. We swam in cenotes, sailed on the Lagoon in Balacar, dipped in waterfalls, and visited difficult-to-reach Mayan ruins. There was something for everyone on the trip. It was also possible to opt out of camping entirely if you prefer. I cannot say enough about the company. I fell in the airport en route to Mexico City. Due to a knee injury, I could not participate in some of the activities. However, Jaime was wonderful. He bent over backward to make sure I was included and made special accommodations so I could continue with the tour. He was endlessly patient and kind. He never made me feel as if my injury was an inconvenience. Even though it clearly was. I am a veteran of many overseas adventure travel trips. Jaime is top-notch and is one of the very best leaders I have traveled with across several continents. His attention to detail was outstanding and he brought his professionalism to every aspect of the trip. From start to finish, the trip was outstanding.

From start to finish, the trip was outstanding.

16-Sep-2023

I recently returned from Lupita Overland’s "Wonders of Mexico" Trip. Travelling in a specially outfitted custom van, we travelled from Mexico City to Tulum in 21 days. Lupita specializes in small group travel and they delivered an outstanding product. The quality of the driving was excellent. I always felt completely safe. I can’t imagine that any company could be better. Jaime González is a fabulous leader. His enthusiasm was infectious. He was like the energizer bunny and attended to every detail of our trip. I had studied Spanish as a child, but I was completely unprepared for how important it would be to have a Spanish-speaking guide. We traveled well off the tourist trail and few people we encountered spoke English. We swam in cenotes, sailed on the Lagoon in Balacar, dipped in waterfalls, and visited a number of difficult-to-reach Mayan ruins. There was something for everyone on the trip. Jaime was willing to accommodate all tastes. My husband and I opted out of camping entirely and took advantage of the hotel upgrades. I cannot say enough about Lupita and Jaime. I fell in the airport en route to Mexico City and unexpectedly arrived in a wheelchair. Due to a knee injury, I could not participate in many of the activities. Jaime bent over backwards to make sure I was included and made special accommodations so I could continue with the tour. He was endlessly patient and kind. He never once made me feel that my injury was an inconvenience, even if it was. I am a veteran of many overseas adventure travel trips across Africa and Asia. In more than two decades of travel, I have experienced the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to tours and tour leaders. I can count the outstanding tour leaders on one hand. Jaime is the best of the best. He is top-notch. His attention to detail was outstanding. He brought his professionalism to every aspect of the trip.

I was lucky enough to be on Lupita’s first overland

25-May-2023

However, it was so well run, so well managed and so trouble-free that you would have never known it was Lupita’s first journey. I am a veteran of 15 overland tours on several continents. I spent more than 3 full years overlanding with the best of the best. Both Jaime and Lupita rank right up at the top. Jaime is an outstanding leader. Years ago, I attended the best tour escort training school in America. Seen through that lens, I can say with complete confidence that Jaime is an extraordinary leader. He is well-read and has a deep knowledge of the country. He has the ability to diffuse difficult situations, he handles unforeseen circumstances with ease. He is the original energizer bunny. He bubbles with endless energy and enthusiasm. He is a delight to be around. Cesar, our driver, was equally qualified. I always felt safe with him. He never lost his patience and never put our lives at risk. He was a magician when it came to parking. Like Jaime, he was a great cook and his guacamole was the star of every meal. I felt completely safe on the entire trip. Unlike other countries I visited, I was surprised how few people spoke English. I had no idea that Jaime’s translation skills would be so important. He was always available to translate and had an endless supply of small change, hand sanitizer, and bug spray. I had taken a very hard fall while changing planes en route to Mexico and arrived in Mexico City by wheelchair. I was unable to participate in some of the walking and all of the hiking, but Jaime never made me feel as if I was a burden. He bent over backward to accommodate my special needs. Because of his extraordinary efforts, I was able to complete the trip with the help of a cane. Thank you, Lupita, Jaime, and Cesar for providing us with a wonderful trip.

Amazing company

An amazing company to enjoy fantastic trips through Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala, in a unique style. Jaime, the owner, is the best! Check out the trips and reviews on the website to be inspired!

Amazing Crew!

24-May-2023

We have recently completed a three-week tour – South Mexico Wonders from Mexico City to Tulum. The trip itself is fantastic (see the main review). However, a great trip only becomes a fantastic trip because of the crew. Jaime is a godsend on any overlanding trip. His infectious enthusiasm and great sense of humor, along with a friendly and humble approach to everyone he meets en route, really do make this trip a special event. Nothing is too much trouble and he cares dearly about showing all the amazing things there are to see in Mexico to its true value. Whether it is dealing with guides, hotel proprietors (some more difficult than others!), host families, or his clients, it is always done with a smile – yet a determination to ensure that the true spirit of the trip and general good grace is maintained. It’s our second time traveling with Jaime and, hopefully, there will be more to come. Our driver, Cesar, is so much fun. Handled the vehicle smoothly and safely and was gracious throughout. He ensured that maximum comfort was upheld at all times and nothing was ever too much for him. A great sense of humor and a great storyteller. His taste in music is pretty good, too! And a final call to the people behind the scenes, particularly Alina, who we were fortunate to meet, and who clearly supports everything that Jaime does and provides much of the inspiration to showcase this fascinating country.

Jaime’s attention to detail is amazing

26-Apr-2023

I just completed 21 days with Lupita on their Mexico City to Tulum trip, in Spring 2023. Jaime’s attention to detail is amazing. His boundless energy and enthusiasm are without equal. His patience, kindness, and politeness are evident to everyone he encounters. However, what sets Jaime apart from the others I have worked with is this: He has the uncanny ability to create a cohesive group of people from various continents who began as strangers and yet finished his tour as friends. His special talent is that he makes a friend of everyone he meets. But, don’t let his easygoing nature fool you. He has a backbone of steel. He can resolve any conflict with grace. Cesar, our driver, was genuine and sweet-spirited. He took our safety seriously and never lost patience or acted rashly. Cesar kept us safe. He was also a magician. We held our breath as he maneuvered our van, Lupita, in and out of tight parking spots. More than once, the passengers broke into cheers after witnessing him squeeze past what appeared to be an impossible obstacle. Cesar is the best of the best. I would feel privileged to be his passenger any time. Together, Jaime and Cesar made a wonderful team. Together, they delivered a remarkable experience and a worthwhile adventure. Bravo, bravo. Well done!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Travel Insurance?

Having travel insurance is essential to protect yourself against unforeseen events and medical emergencies while on the trip. We require all passengers to have comprehensive medical travel insurance before the trip begins. Before joining the group, you will need to facilitate your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number. We accept any travel insurance provider as long as we have the necessary policy details, including the policy number and the company's 24-hour emergency contact number. It should cover medical expenses, emergency repatriation, personal liability, and trip cancellation or curtailment. Also, check if it includes coverage for COVID-19 treatment and repatriation. While other inclusions like loss of baggage or flight coverage are optional, it's best to consider them for comprehensive protection. Please ensure your insurance is valid from the first day of your trip with Lupita Overland. If you want to use your annual or credit card insurance, it's crucial to carefully review your policy to ensure it provides sufficient coverage for adventure and overland travel.

Will I know the names and details of all the accommodation before I depart?

You can check the names and details of all the accommodations before your departure on the itinerary. Please note that it isn’t always possible to use the expected hotels. Yet, we always find similar accommodations if needed.

Can I just do part of the trip?

If you need to leave a day or so earlier than the scheduled end, you can sign off the tour, but please note that there won't be any reimbursement for the unused portion of the trip. However, it is not possible to join the tour days later than it begins to maintain good group dynamics and interaction.

What happens if someone on a trip shows symptoms of COVID-19?

If a traveler tests positive for COVID-19 and wishes to continue on their trip, they will be required to take appropriate measures to prevent transmission. This may include wearing a mask when in close contact with others. The company will also adhere to local COVID-19 regulations and protocols, which may be stricter than its own guidelines. The safety and well-being of all passengers and crew are of utmost importance, and necessary actions will be taken to ensure the health of everyone on the trip.

I’m traveling solo – is that OK?

Absolutely! Solo travelers are more than welcome on our trips. Many join to meet like-minded people and share experiences. Our dedicated crew ensures everyone feels welcome and included, fostering a friendly and inclusive atmosphere. Traveling solo with Lupita Overland lets you connect with people from various backgrounds, nationalities, and ages, sharing exciting experiences, immersing in local cultures, and exploring stunning landscapes together. If you seek an unforgettable adventure and meaningful connections, Lupita Overland is the perfect choice for you!

I'm traveling with a partner, can I make sure we have a double bed?

If you're traveling with a partner and wish to share a room with a double bed, please inform us at the time of booking. While we cannot guarantee a double bed in all accommodations, we will make every effort to accommodate your request. Rest assured that we will strive to provide you with suitable rooming arrangements for you and your partner throughout the tour.

Will there be access to charging points?

Yes, you will have regular access to electricity during the trip. Our vehicle is equipped with USB charging points, so you can keep your devices powered throughout the journey. Additionally, most of the hotels and camping areas we stay at have 120 V charging points, which use the American plug system.

Are Lupita trips good value for money?

Absolutely! Lupita trips offer excellent value for money compared to other operators. We go above and beyond to include more activities, meals, and visits to both popular highlights and remote destinations, ensuring you get the most out of your adventure. While some competitors may cut costs by skipping essential attractions or leaving activities as optional, we prioritize the quality and depth of your experience. Our approach fosters better group dynamics as everyone can participate in shared activities without worrying about additional expenses. By carefully comparing our inclusions and offerings, you'll quickly realize the exceptional value a Lupita Overland trip provides. You'll save money and have a more immersive and fulfilling journey!

Can I book upgrades in advance?

While upgrades are usually available, they cannot be guaranteed in advance. Your crew will assist you in booking upgrades during the trip. If camping is not your preference, you can opt for a 100% hotel trip or inquire about our tailor-made options. To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience, please inform us in advance if you wish to request an upgrade or have specific requirements. We will do our best to accommodate your needs and prioritize your comfort and satisfaction during the journey.

What is a Cook Group? How does it work?

A Cook Group consists of 2-3 people responsible for meal preparation during our trips on a rotating basis. The tour leader will assign members to each cook group and provide ideas and quantities for cooking. You'll have time to plan your meals and create a shopping list for fresh food (non-perishable items are usually already available in the van). Every time it is possible, we shop at local markets rather than big supermarkets, enhancing the cultural experience and supporting the local economy. Once at the camping destination, the kitchen is set up, and the cook group, with assistance from our crew, cooks calmly enjoying the experience. We will inform the groups of any dietary restrictions. We accommodate dietary restrictions and aim to cater to everyone's likes. For example, the main sauce might be vegetarian and we will cook some meat apart so anyone can add it to your taste. If you are vegetarian and do not wish to handle meat, you will be in a group where others are happy to do this. After cooking, everyone helps in cleaning and tidying up the camping gear, including washing dishes.

Should I expect En-route refunds if not being able to follow the included plans?

As a policy, en-route refunds for cancellations of included activities, accommodation, or airport transfers cannot be guaranteed. Tour prices are based on group rates, and changes or cancellations may not be eligible for refunds. In some cases, small refunds in local currency may be provided for adjustments or cancellations during the trip. Unforeseen circumstances may lead to itinerary changes, and your understanding and flexibility are appreciated. For specific concerns about refunds or itinerary changes, you can contact us for assistance.

Do I need to pay any local payment/group found?

No, you do not need to pay any additional local payment or group funds during the tour. Our tour prices cover accommodation and activities. You can have peace of mind knowing that there are no hidden fees or extra payments required once you have booked your tour with Lupita Overland. The price you see is the price you pay, and it includes everything specified in the tour itinerary. We aim to provide transparent pricing and a hassle-free experience for our travelers. Enjoy your adventure with us without worrying about any additional costs!

What policies are in place for Covid-19?

To ensure the safety and well-being of passengers and crew during the ongoing Covid-19 situation, several measures have been implemented. These include adding an extra opening window in the vehicle to improve air ventilation when necessary, thorough disinfection of the vehicle before each tour, compulsory use of hand sanitizer before entering the vehicle, and free provision of hand sanitizer disposable surgical masks. The use of sealed potable water is prioritized, even for washing dishes. It's important to note that these measures may be adjusted based on the current situation, and continuous updates will be made as needed, with common sense and communication between the group.

Will there be Mosquitoes and Insects?

In certain areas, there may be mosquitoes and insects during the trip. Coastal areas like Oaxaca's Coast can have a high abundance of mosquitoes. We prioritize accommodations with mosquito nets to protect you while sleeping, but communal areas like restaurants may not have them, so it's advisable to use mosquito repellent and wear long sleeves and pants during the evenings. In jungle regions, you might encounter insects such as big spiders, but they are usually not dangerous, and it's best to let them be. In some cases, insects may enter cabins, but our team and hosts will be available to assist if needed. Being prepared with mosquito repellent and appropriate clothing can minimize any discomfort. Our experienced crew will ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience.

If I am traveling solo, will I be charged for having my room?

On our trips, rooming is typically organized on a twin-share basis. As a solo traveler, you will be paired with another traveler of the same gender. However, if you prefer to have your own space, you have the option to pay for an individual room. Single rooms are available on the majority of our trips under request.

How much camping is involved?

Our trips typically include camping, with an average camping percentage ranging from 0% to 35%. You can review the accommodation details for each stop on the daily itinerary. If you're new to camping, don't worry - our vehicle comes fully stocked with tents, sleeping bags, liners, and basic mats, to ensure a comfortable camping experience. Our experienced crew will be on hand to assist you throughout the process. If camping isn't your preference, there are usually options available to upgrade to cabins during camping stops or choose trips that do not involve camping.

Are Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize safe countries for tourists?

In general, Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize are safe countries for tourists, and the locals are welcoming and helpful to visitors. As with any adventure travel, there is always an inherent risk, but choosing a reputable local company like Lupita can significantly reduce this risk. We prioritize security and have numerous safety measures in place to ensure your well-being. For additional travel advisories, you can check the websites of your government’s travel advice. Please note that these government sites are required to be cautious in their advisories. The vast majority of travelers do not experience any of the reported problems.

Is free Wi-Fi available in the accommodation used?

During the trip, you will generally have access to Wi-Fi at least every two days. Wi-Fi availability and quality can vary depending on the location. In some accommodations, Wi-Fi might be accessible only in communal areas of the hotel and not in individual rooms. Plus, on very few accommodations, Wi-Fi is paid apart at your own cost.

Is there any free time to explore places during the tour?

Yes, our tours include some free time to freely explore. While our itineraries are designed to be comprehensive, we also understand the importance of allowing travelers to have the flexibility and independence to explore on their own. Having some free time allows you to have a more personalized experience, interact with locals, and immerse yourself further in the destinations you visit. Your tour leader will usually provide suggestions and recommendations for things to do and see during your free time.

What level of active involvement is expected on an Overland Trip?

Yes, active involvement is encouraged and welcomed during your Lupita Overland trip! When you join one of our expeditions, you become an integral part of the team, not just a passive passenger. Overlanding is all about collaboration and participation, and we believe that the more you engage with the experience, the more rewarding and enriching it becomes. Throughout the journey, everyone participates in various tasks, such as setting up camp, pitching tents, shopping for food, and cooking. We have a rotating "jobs" list posted on the notice board during the trip to ensure that everyone shares the responsibilities. This shared effort fosters a strong sense of camaraderie among travelers, and it's through these shared tasks and experiences that unforgettable memories are created. So, be prepared to get involved, embrace the spirit of teamwork, and make wonderful memories together!

What are the Advantages of Overland Travel?

Traveling overland offers several often overlooked advantages compared to other travel styles. Sharing dedicated transport for the entire trip means no waiting around, and traveling during daylight hours allows for fantastic sightseeing. With trusted local guides and partners, there's no need to search for special excursions. Sharing responsibilities with the group makes logistics easier, and the experienced crew takes care of background arrangements, ensuring a stress-free journey. Overlanding allows you to meet like-minded travelers and forge lifelong friendships, and you have the flexibility to do your own thing while benefiting from cost-effective travel and access to off-the-beaten-track destinations. Additionally, you get the opportunity to mix with the local community, meet homestay members and locals, and experience authentic interactions during your adventure.

Will refrigeration be available for medicines? eg. Insulin

Refrigeration for medicines, including insulin, cannot be guaranteed for the entire trip. While our vehicle has a fridge, and some city hotels may provide access to small fridges, remote areas may not have this facility. We encourage you to inform us in advance if you require refrigeration for medication, so we can make necessary arrangements whenever possible to meet your medical needs during the trip. Your well-being is essential to us, and we will do our best to accommodate your requirements.

What is the fitness level required to do your tours?

While you don't need to be an athlete, a reasonable level of fitness and mobility is required to fully enjoy the experience. You should be able to move around comfortably, climb steps, and board the van. Entry into the van and some sites may involve steps with a height of approximately 45 cm. Some hikes may involve steep hills or uneven terrain, and you should be prepared for moderate physical exertion. We understand that each individual has unique physical capabilities and preferences. You are welcome to skip any activity that you find too demanding.

What documents will I receive before I travel?

Before you travel with Lupita Overland, you will receive a detailed itinerary with information about daily activities, accommodations, and important details. You will also receive a short schedule overview for each day. Printed copies of the itinerary will be available in the tour van, and a printed copy of the short schedule will be provided during the pre-departure meeting. You will also receive guides and documents with valuable information about tour stops and local attractions to enhance your travel experience. These resources will ensure you have all the necessary information for a memorable trip.

Do you hire local guides for the included activities?

Yes, we hire carefully chosen local experts and professionals to guide travelers through included activities, such as archaeological sites, trekking excursions, and community projects. These local guides enrich the tour itineraries with their unique perspectives and knowledge. Collaborating with them ensures an immersive and meaningful travel experience while supporting and engaging with the local communities visited.

What is the tipping policy?

Tips for local guides and included activities are already covered in the tour price, so there is no need to tip them separately. However, if you feel our overland crew has done an excellent job and you wish to show appreciation, a tip is always appreciated, but not obligatory. The approximate amount for tipping the crew is around 3-8 USD per day per crew member, but tipping is entirely at your discretion and within your means. Tipping in restaurants and optional excursions is common and typically around 10%, if you are pleased with the service. For airport transfers or taxis tipping is not common. At hotels, tipping around 10-20 pesos for assistance with luggage is customary, and you may also leave a small tip for housekeepers. When it comes to street artists, sellers, or beggars, the choice to tip is entirely yours. Supporting local development projects is also a great way to contribute to the community.

Will we find Adverse Weather Conditions?

The weather in the areas we visit is generally pleasant, with sunny days and temperatures ranging from 15 to 30 ºC. However, there are some potential adverse weather conditions to be aware of. In certain regions, temperatures can reach up to 40ºC. At higher altitudes more than 3,000 m), temperatures can drop to around 5ºC. The rainy season is from July to October, with heavy rains in the afternoons or evenings. Overall, weather conditions can vary, so it's important to be prepared for different climates during the trip.

What will the food be like on my trip?

Food is an exciting aspect of travel, especially when exploring Mexico's vibrant cuisine. Our flexible itineraries allow you to experience group meals or dine on your own, according to your preferences and budget. While touristy towns offer a variety of food, remote areas may have limited options, but it's an excellent opportunity to savor traditional dishes. Common meals include eggs and quesadillas with various fillings such as cheese, mushrooms, beans, eggs, chicken, or pork. Vegetarians might find options a bit repetitive, and vegan choices are unfortunately quite limited. Please be aware that we may include meals in certain lodges where ordering from the menu could be time-consuming. Throughout your trip, our crew will be there to assist and guide you, ensuring you have a fantastic culinary experience. Bon appétit!

Are Lupita trips LGBTQIA+ friendly?

Absolutely! At Lupita Adventures, we are committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all travelers. We celebrate diversity and believe that everyone should feel comfortable and respected during their journey with us. We have a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of discrimination, violence, or harassment, and we actively promote a supportive and accepting atmosphere. Your safety and well-being are our top priorities, and we encourage open communication with our tour leaders if any issues arise. You are welcome to join our adventures, and we look forward to providing you with an unforgettable and inclusive travel experience.

Who will be my travelling companions on the tour?

Lupita's tours attract travelers who have a keen desire to explore off-the-beaten-track destinations. These adventures are accessible to all, and no special skills are required to join. A sense of adventure, curiosity about the world, and a minimum level of physical fitness are all that's needed. The tours offer a unique opportunity for bonding with like-minded individuals from various age groups and nationalities, fostering a sense of camaraderie, and often leading to lifelong friendships. Whether traveling solo or with friends, participants have the freedom to choose their level of engagement with others. We believe that the people you travel with can enrich your experience as much as the destinations you visit, creating a friendly and accepting atmosphere for all to create cherished memories together. So, whether you're a seasoned globetrotter or a first-time adventurer, we welcome you to embrace the spirit of exploration and camaraderie!

Do you operate a “single share” option and how does it work?

Certainly, you can typically reserve a single room for private accommodation during your trip. This option is usually available during the booking process. However, please be aware that we may not be able to guarantee single rooms for all stops. In such instances, we recommend informing us of your preference for single accommodation when making your reservation.

How much extra money will I spend while on the trip?

The extra money you'll spend on the trip varies depending on personal preferences and the tour itinerary. Most activities and a significant portion of meals are covered, but budget for optional activities, visa fees, drinks, souvenirs, laundry, additional meals, and local transportation. Daily expenses for passengers range from 5 to 30 USD. Please carry extra money for unexpected expenses. Review the trip notes and itinerary to plan your budget and ensure an enjoyable experience with Lupita Overland. Happy trails!

Is the tour coach air conditioned?

Yes, it is! Our tour coach is air-conditioned, which is a significant advantage, especially when traveling through tropical regions with hot and humid weather. Additionally, the tinted windows and curtains contribute to maintaining a fresh interior environment inside the vehicle.

I have a disability – can I join a Lupita trip?

Lupita is committed to making travel widely accessible. We ask that you consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen. We will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips whenever possible to accommodate the requirements of disabled travelers. In some cases, travelers with disabilities may find it more practical to travel with a friend who can provide specific assistance. If you have any specific concerns or requirements related to your disability, please reach out to us, and we will be happy to discuss how we can best accommodate your needs.

How long are the driving days?

Our driving days are generally shorter compared to other companies, but on a few occasions, they may last up to 7-8 hours. Please note that the driving hours indicated in our itineraries are approximate and do not include time for activities, lunch, or restroom breaks. During the journey, we make regular stops every two to three hours for restroom breaks and opportunities to visit interesting places along the route. Remember… It’s the journey, not just the destination!

Do you value Local Interaction on your Tours?

Yes, we highly value local interaction on our tours. Overland Travel is about experiencing, feeling, and learning, and we immerse ourselves in the cultures and places we visit. We actively involve local communities, providing opportunities to meet the locals on all our trips. These interactions result in amazing memories and anecdotes much more valuable than any photo at the “main tourist attractions”.

Will I be able to adapt to Adventure Travel?

Adventure travel with Lupita Overland is designed to be accessible and enjoyable for most people, and you don't need to be an extreme adventurer to join the tours. All that's required is a positive attitude, an open mind, and a reasonable level of physical capability. Detailed trip information is provided to help you choose the right tour based on your preferences and abilities. While some participation is expected, such as assisting with luggage and camping, these tasks are manageable and add to the fun experience.

Are your drivers experienced? Do both crews drive?

Unlike other companies that only have one driver, both of our crew members are experienced drivers, and they play crucial roles in ensuring a safe and enjoyable travel experience for all our passengers. The main driver is responsible for driving the vehicle during most of the journey. However, the tour leader is also capable of driving when needed, creating a well-coordinated and secure travel environment. Your safety is our top priority, and our crew follows strict resting periods, avoids alcohol consumption 12 hours before driving, and takes necessary precautions to ensure alertness during long drives. You can travel with confidence, knowing that our experienced crew is committed to your well-being throughout the journey.

I don’t like "commercial tours." Will the experience be different with Lupita Overland?

Absolutely! Lupita Overland offers a genuine and distinctive experience that sets it apart from typical commercial tours. Our adventures are more akin to "expeditions," led by our dedicated and passionate crew who handle all logistics and ensure the best local guides for each attraction. They go beyond being tour guides and become your friends on the journey, sharing in the enjoyment of the trip with you. We strive to provide authentic experiences, like visiting local markets and guiding you to our favorite local spots, enabling you to interact with the locals and immerse yourself in the true essence of the destination, creating lasting and meaningful memories.

Will there be Wi-Fi access?

During the trip, you will generally have access to Wi-Fi at least every two days. Wi-Fi availability and quality can vary depending on the location. In some accommodations, Wi-Fi might be accessible only in communal areas of the hotel and not in individual rooms. Plus, on very few accommodations, Wi-Fi is paid apart at your own cost.

Can I opt out of certain activities if I want to?

Absolutely. If there are included or optional activities that you don’t wish to participate in, you can do your own thing instead. The exception to this is when we are trekking or traveling from one destination to the next. Please note that if you choose to opt out of an included activity, no reimbursement can be made by Lupita.

How do you arrange room sharing? Who will I share with?

Room sharing on the trip is arranged to create a positive group dynamic. If you booked with a specific person, you'll share a room with them. Solo travelers share rooms with others of the same gender on a rotation basis. If you prefer your own space, you can pay for an individual room (subject to availability). Hotel stays usually have twin rooms, sometimes triple or single rooms. Community stays may involve sharing basic cabins with more than three people (occasionally open-gender). While camping, you'll share a spacious tent with another passenger.

Is the accommodation air-conditioned?

While some accommodations we choose may have air conditioning, it is not guaranteed for all locations, especially in remote and immersive community stays. Most accommodations have fans to provide relief from hot and humid conditions, which can reach up to 40ºC in certain regions. We prioritize immersive experiences that support local communities and offer enriching cultural encounters. If you specifically desire accommodations with air conditioning, please check the itinerary beforehand to see which hotels offer this feature, although occasional failures or issues with the units may still occur. Our goal is to provide you with a comfortable and authentic travel experience.

Can you assist with pre or post tour accommodation?

We sure can. Just let us know at the time of booking. We can provide options for accommodation in the same hotels where the tour begins and ends, ensuring a seamless experience. As part of our service, we can also recommend optional activities and attractions based on our local knowledge and expertise.

What's Overlanding all about?

Overlanding is all about experiencing the real essence of a country, including its highlights while venturing away from the typical tourist trail. Our Off-the-beaten-path, Inspirational Journeys provide unique and life-changing experiences. From trekking through dense jungles in search of wildlife or meeting curious villagers in remote areas, we promise you an adventure of a lifetime!

Should I have some Contingency Money?

Yes, having some contingency money is always a wise decision when traveling, even though such situations are rare. Unexpected events or emergencies can occur, and having extra funds available can provide you with peace of mind and ensure that you can handle any unforeseen expenses. We recommend having approximately USD 500 set aside as contingency money.

Can I make sure I share a Twin Room (two separate beds) with my friend?

Will everything run as expected on an Overland Tour?

While we strive to make everything run smoothly, please be aware that unforeseen factors may necessitate changes to the itinerary and schedule. Overlanding is an adventurous way to explore, and embracing the unexpected is part of the journey!

Who will be my tour leader and driver?

During your trip with Lupita Overland, you will be accompanied by a team of two professional, experienced, and passionate overland crew members - a Tour Leader and a Driver. Your Tour Leader, Jaime, has extensive experience in overlanding since 2012 and is the company owner, dedicated to providing incredible journeys. Both crew members are experienced drivers, and the Tour Leader can assist the main driver when needed, ensuring a well-coordinated and secure travel experience. Rest assured you will be in capable hands during your journey!

What types of experiences are included in your tours?

Our tours offer a diverse range of experiences, combining major highlights with off-the-beaten-path adventures. You'll have the chance to immerse yourself in local cultures, encounter wildlife, and participate in various expert-guided activities. These are not mere sightseeing tours; you'll engage in activities like trekking through volcanoes, cooking in Mayan villages, and sailing on picturesque journeys. Our tours include archaeological tours, wildlife watching, treks, and more, with around 75% of activities included, 20% being "free," and approximately 5% being optional for added flexibility. Safety is paramount, so we avoid high-risk activities without appropriate safety measures (If you choose to participate in these activities, you'll need to sign a disclaimer). Your trip itinerary will have a comprehensive list of activities, though some may be subject to changes due to unpredictability.

Do I need to tip the local guides?

Tips for local guides and included activities are already covered, there is no need to tip! We take pride in incorporating all tips for the local guides, ensuring you have peace of mind during your tour. Our dedicated tour leader is responsible for assessing our collaborators' rates and service quality, making them the best person to determine appropriate tip amounts. Thus, we have included this cost in your tour price, alleviating any concerns on your part. Whenever necessary, our tour leader will tip the local guides on behalf of the entire group.

How do you prioritize sustainability and responsible tourism?

At Lupita, responsible tourism is central to our operations, focusing on minimizing environmental impact, empowering local communities, and promoting ethical practices. We inform our customers about responsible tourism and local traditions, support local businesses, and partner with environmentally-engaged companies to protect natural areas. Our zero-trace and recycling policy, along with providing potable water and reusable shopping bags, promote waste reduction. We invest in fuel-efficient vehicles, maintain small group sizes, and collaborate with the Atmosfair Project to reduce our carbon footprint. We prioritize defending human rights, providing fair conditions for staff and collaborators, and avoiding partnerships with entities promoting unfair labor practices, prostitution, drugs, or exploitation. Additionally, we fight against animal cruelty, avoiding activities that harm animals or nature, discouraging souvenirs made from protected species, and educating our customers on wildlife preservation.

What measures do you take to make your tours safer?

At Lupita Overland, we prioritize the safety and well-being of our travelers and implement various measures to ensure a secure travel experience. These measures include regularly monitoring travel advisories from reputable sources, maintaining constant communication with local authorities and suppliers, and having experienced crew members who are knowledgeable about local customs and safety protocols. Our vehicles undergo regular inspections and are covered by comprehensive insurance. Unlike other companies that only have one driver, both of our crew members are experienced drivers, and they play crucial roles in ensuring a safe and enjoyable travel experience. We have safety and emergency protocols in place and carefully select secure accommodations. Health and hygiene are paramount, and we provide pre-trip information to our travelers about safety guidelines and local customs. With our commitment to safety, you can embark on your adventure with confidence, knowing that we have taken every precaution to ensure your security.

What are the safety measures in your vehicle?

At Lupita Overland, we prioritize vehicle safety and have implemented various measures to ensure a secure and worry-free journey. Our vehicle is new and well-maintained, undergoing regular checks at the official Volkswagen Workshop. We provide compulsory 3-point retractable seatbelts on every seat and have emergency hammers, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits on board. Passengers are required to use hand sanitizer, and we regularly disinfect the interior for hygiene. Safety cameras, GPS tracking, and an alarm system enhance security. In case of emergencies, we have a recovery system and comprehensive insurance coverage. Our vehicle also provides a safe in the van for your valuables, and the crew will explain the protocol for its use during the tour. These measures guarantee a safe and comfortable travel experience for all passengers, providing peace of mind throughout the journey.

Is there a limit to luggage that can be brought on the tour?

We recommend bringing a main backpack and a daypack. Please note the space for luggage is limited. The largest weight for the main bag is 18 kg per person and dimensions should not exceed 75 x 30 x 30 cm. Best style for your main bag would be a backpack or duffle bag. If you are a souvenir lover, remember to save some space in your backpack.

What is the standard of the hotels on this tour?

We provide carefully chosen for your comfort and enjoyment. Accommodations range from good hotels with modern amenities to community-run eco-tourism centers and well-equipped campsites. In remote areas, experience basic camping for a true adventure with nature. Alternative arrangements are available if needed, ensuring a pleasant stay throughout the journey.

Can you provide more information about local projects you support?

We are proud to collaborate with various local projects during our tours, aiming to empower local communities, support artisans, and preserve cultural and natural heritage. Some of the projects we support include education programs, small business support, scholarships, environmental conservation, and cultural preservation initiatives. Each project is carefully chosen to create a positive impact and promote solidarity. By joining Lupita, travelers not only have a fulfilling adventure but also actively contribute to these meaningful projects and responsible tourism practices, making a positive difference in the places they explore.

Is Overland Travel suitable for first-timers?

Absolutely! Our tours are designed to cater to all levels of travelers, including those new to Overland Travel. We provide a well-balanced mix of adventure, exploration, and comfort, creating an enjoyable experience for everyone.

Is it possible to reserve a Triple Room for our group of three?

While there are limited stops where triple rooms are available, we will do our best to accommodate your group in a triple room whenever possible, as per your preference. Most hotel rooms typically come with two "matrimonial beds" that are 135 cm wide. By default, we will arrange for your group of three to stay in one twin room, with the remaining individual sharing with another traveler of the same gender. However, if you prefer to share a matrimonial bed, please let us know, but please be aware that this decision is final and cannot be changed afterward. Additionally, please note that there is no discount for using one less bed.

Will there be internet data for mobile use?

There is basic data coverage in most places you'll visit. Yet, please note some of our destinations are out of the way and you may have limited coverage. You can consider using E-Sims like Flexiroam. Alternatively, we can assist you in purchasing a local SIM card (just make sure your phone is unlocked!).

What is the maximum group size?

At Lupita, we believe in the value of small and intimate groups. Our trips are designed to be flexible and respectful toward the communities we visit, ensuring that we do not overwhelm or intimidate the locals. Typically, you will be traveling with a small group of 5-9 people, accompanied by two crew.

What if I get ill or injured on the trip and am unable to continue?

Our leaders are trained to deal with these situations and we'll endeavor to get you help as quickly as possible. If you must leave the trip early due to illness, we will help you find appropriate medical care and ensure someone at home is aware of the situation. We will do whatever we can to get you home or on your onward journey. Your travel insurance, which is compulsory on all our trips, should cover any costs incurred if illness occurs.

Are there vaccination or testing requirements for your trips?

We don't require any proof of vaccination. As tour operators, we are not medical practitioners, and therefore, we are unable to provide specific medical advice or vaccination recommendations. We highly recommend consulting with a qualified healthcare professional or official source for advice on vaccinations and health precautions for your travel destinations. We strongly advise all travelers and leaders to get vaccinated against COVID-19 for their safety and the safety of others. Note certain destinations or airlines may have their own testing or vaccination requirements, so travelers should check travel and entry requirements carefully.

I have dietary requirements, is this a problem?

We value accommodating dietary requirements to ensure a comfortable experience for all travelers. Please inform us of your needs when booking, and we'll consider them when planning meals, especially during camping days. While touristy towns offer a variety of food, some regions may have limited options. Common meals include eggs and quesadillas with various fillings such as cheese, mushrooms, beans, eggs, chicken, or pork. Vegetarians might find options a bit repetitive, and vegan choices are unfortunately quite limited. In summary, while there may be some limitations in certain areas, we will do our best to provide suitable and delicious meals for all dietary preferences. Your satisfaction and well-being are important to us, and we aim to ensure you have a positive dining experience throughout the journey. ps: It's a great idea to carry a card with your dietary requirements written in the local language, which can be helpful when dining away from the group.
